Single of the week: Nisa – Exaggerate review

by Paddy Kinsella

For some, an intense feeling is the only way of accessing the present. It’s why so many of us exercise for our mental health. When your feet are pounding the pavement, sweat streaming down your chest, there’s little time to think about anything else. New York’s Nisa describes the songs from her upcoming EP, Exaggerate as ‘moments’ rather than events, and the title-track – shared today via the newly-launched Hit The North label – skilfully precursors a body of work hell-bent on activating the senses.

Adrenaline-inducing activities are often fast and fleeting, but the airborne, Purity Ring-referencing Exaggerate imitates an endless rollercoaster where the loops keep on coming.  It’s a song that gives permanence to life’s most ephemeral moments: lightning strikes, racing heartbeats, hazy, drunk nights out. Through sound she articulates feelings that words could never do justice to.
