Single Of The Week: Lilts – Dodge Street

By Phil Scarisbrick

Lilts is the new band formed by Laura Wolf and Wild Pink’s John Ross. Having first met while touring alongside one another in 2017, the pair took their musical relationship to the next level last year with a back and forth trading of song ideas. The results of this collaboration will come in the form of a debut EP, Waiting Around, which will be released this October via Better Company Records. In anticipation of this release, a first taste was offered this week in the form of new single, Dodge Street.

The song bursts into life, almost catching you off guard with Wolf’s dream-like vocal hitting you straight from the off. Ross’ customary strums will be familiar ground to those au fait with his ‘day job’. The two principal components blend wonderfully, with the vocal adding more layers as the song progresses. Infusing together like fresh milk being poured into your morning coffee, the two becoming so intrinsically welded that they appear vital to one another.

The lyrics are made up of five simple lines, yet they hit hard with the final ‘I don’t wanna waste another day’ tripping over the previous message, providing the perfect metaphor for doubt and uneasiness clouding the otherwise stoic statement.
