Father John Misty – Mr. Tillman

After performing the track live at a show in Tokyo last week, plus discussing in various interviews that a new album was in the pipeline, Father John Misty this week released his latest piece of tongue in cheek, off-kilter pop, Mr. Tillman.

With the album due at some point in 2018, Mr. Tillman is FJM’s first release since his Grammy winning LP, Pure Comedy, in 2017.

Parquet Courts – Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience

Following on from 2016’s Human Performance, New York City’s Parquet Courts have announced new album Wide Awake!  In a seemingly leftfield choice for the band, the record is produced by The Grey Album’s creator, Danger Mouse (Beck/The Black Keys/Gorillaz). Our first glimpse of the collaboration comes in the form of lead single, Almost Had To Start A Fight/In And Out Of Patience, complete with an animated video made by the band’s co-leader: A. Savage.

Wide Awake! will be released via Rough Trade Records on 18th May.

The Breeders – Nervous Mary

With a week to go until the release of their first original line-up album in 25 years, All Nerve, The Breeders have released the record’s opening track: Nervous Mary. This is the third single we’ve heard from the album, following on from lead single Wait In The Car, as well as the album’s title track. There is huge anticipation around this album, and this last tit-bit should tantalise fans even more.

Released through 4AD, All Nerve is released on 2nd March.

Granfalloon – Ambulance

Granfalloon’s new single, Ambulance, tackles the self imposed rituals that we use to keep ourselves mentally healthy. “Touch your head and touch your toes/If you don’t want to go in one of those,” Richard Lomax croons over a Sufjan-evoking lo-fi, folktronica.

Mixed by Sydney based Jack Prest (AKA Future Love Hangover), Ambulance is out now on Manchester label The Dogan.

Mastersystem – Notes On A Life Not Quite Lived

Scottish Indie band Frightened Rabbit have built a bit of cult following since their 2007 debut album, Sing The Greys. Since then, as well as several FR albums, the various members have kept busy with other projects, including frontman Scott Hutchison’s first solo album Owl John. Featuring two sets of brothers, Mastersystem are made up by Frightened Rabbit’s Scott and Grant Hutchison, and Justin and James Lockey (Editors and Minor Victories respectively). Initially formed on a groggy night in Berlin in 2016, they release their debut album, Dance Music, on 6th April through Physical Education Records.

This week they have released first single, Notes On A Life Not Quite Lived, and have announced that they will also be touring the UK in late April.

Flatbush Zombies – Headstone

The Brooklyn hip-hop trio are gaining a lot of notoriety on the rap underground following their 2016 debut album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey. In January, they announced follow-up – Vacation in Hell – and have now followed that up with its first single: Headstone. Their aggressive style of rap, built over psychedelic beats is proving very popular and this is typified on Headstone. I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from this group in the near future.

Vacation in Hell is released on 6th April on The Glorious Dead.
