New Music Recommendations – 6th July 2018

by Dave Bertram and Philip Moss

Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood – With Animals

With their second album, With Animals (due for release 24th August via Heavenly Recordings), Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood have unveiled the LP’s deep and brooding title track as the second single.

Recorded in the songwriter’s house by the aforementioned producer, Lanegan said, “If someone were to listen closely with headphones they might hear a bark, meow, growl or whine embedded in the music. Hence the title of the song and album.”

Gruff Rhys – No Profit In Pain

Following last month’s brilliant new album, Babelsberg, Gruff Rhys has penned a new one off single, No Profit In Pain, to commemorate this week’s 70th birthday of the NHS. And following a commission from the National Theatre of Wales, he reminds us, quite rightly, that is is a service we must not take for granted.

In his Guardian piece, Rhys stated- ‘The NHS is something that we can too easily take for granted. I’ve twice toured with musicians in America when they’ve had broken limbs and not been able to afford treatment. Each time, they had to continue touring in pain in cramped vans, using homemade splints and slings. It’s a precarious way to live if you don’t have insurance. The NHS has been there for me throughout my life and has saved many of my family members’ lives. It means more than anything I could ever hope to convey in a melodramatic synth-pop power ballad.’

No Profit In Pain is available now. All proceeds will go to NHS charities in Wales.

Granfalloon – Sleep

Granfalloon’s follow-up to the quirky, off-kilter Broken Things sees the Manchester four-piece jack-up the intensity for the mysterious yet aggressive, Sleep.

Synths cut through guitars to cut through synths to create a swirling musical backdrop to frontman Lomax’s eccentric call – “Time? Money? You can’t have both.” Quite.

Granfalloon launch the video for Sleep today.

Tanukichan – Natural

US dream-pop multi-instrumentalist, Hannah Van Loon, has provided the third taste from her upcoming Chaz Bear (Toro Y Moi) produced record, Sundays – in her ode to love, Natural.

Dreamy vocals, tight, melodic guitars and rhythmic drums send Natural on a wistful, two-and-a-half-minute shoegaze affair that will tick all the boxes for fans of Mitski and Japanese Breakfast.

Natural is available now on Company Records.

Eric Bachmann – No Recover

Former Archers Of Loaf, Crooked Fingers frontman and recent Neko Case collaborator, Eric Bachmann, is set to release No Recover– the follow up to his 2016 self-titled record.

Featuring background vocals by his longtime collaborator and wife, Liz Durrett, the album’s lead single and title track is a gentle and whimsical affair, but one that certainly is relatable, and whets the appetite ahead of the album’s upcoming release.

No Recover (single) is out now on Merge Records. Album due in autumn.
