New Music Recommendations – 3rd May 2019

by Dave Bertram and Philip Moss

Some old and some new faces on our recommendations board for you this week – with Erin Durant, Steve Gunn, Cate Le Bon, David Allred and Porridge Radio, Lavender Bones and KP all lavishing us with great new music.

The first single from Erin Durant’s upcoming new album is a Joni sized slice of wonder – check out Highway Blue above, which will feature on the Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio) produced Islands. Due out in June through the ever amazing Keeled Scales label.

The aforementioned, celebrated singer-songwriter will return to the UK this summer for a run of headline shows following the release of his acclaimed new album The Unseen In Between on Matador Records. With this news comes a wonderful special session from Steve Gunn of his The Unseen In Between standout Morning Is Mended.

Cate Le Bon makes the cut again with the third offering from upcoming record Reward. The Light, which follows Daylight Matters and Home To You sees one of our favourite songwriters on brilliantly languid form.

Brighton four-piece Porridge Radio are back with their first music for three years after a string of shows across their hometown. Following Give/Take – released earlier in the year – Don’t Ask Me Twice is a rousing banger that would have slipped nicely onto Goat Girl‘s debut.

NYC based, Lavender Bones, is the recording project of Janise Lazarte. On Over Again, we’re treated to a lovely slice of lo-fi pop – out now on Don’t Label Me Records.

KP, who’s going to be featuring on the new Morrissey album, California Son, has released House on Fire – taken from her Heart to Mouth album. It’s another cut that features her ever distinctive voice and a raging chorus.

And finally, following on from last year’s acclaimed debut with Erased Tapes, The Transition — named #17 album of the year by The Sunday Times — Californian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Allred returns with new mini-album The Cell and the single, .
