Mark Lanegan and Duke Garwood – Save Me

Fresh from last week’s New Music Review appearance as part of Neko Case’s new single, former Screaming Trees frontman – and all-round troubadour – Mark Lanegan releases Save Me: the first track to be taken from With Animals- his most recent partnership with regular collaborator ,Duke Garwood.

In 2013, Lanegan and Garwood released their first official album with equal credits – in the form of Black Pudding, but since, Garwood has featured on other Lanegan albums such as 2012’s Blues Funeral and 2017’s Gargoyle.

Speaking in the press release, Garwood commented on the relationship that the two have built up- ‘Over the years, we’ve recorded together and apart. Our music is instinct. There is not much talking about it, just creating. I think that if you are at peace with your work, and feeling it right, it flows, and can feel easy. Music isn’t meant to be hard. Though sometimes it can burn you to ashes. Making music for a singer, so they can inhabit it with a song means hitting the right soul buttons. There is no hit without a miss. It is a healing record, for us the makers, and for the listeners. It grows natural. We are gardeners of sonic feelings.’

Wild Animals is released 24th August on Heavenly recordings, with a tour of the UK set for October.

Daniel Whitehouse – Rattlebrain

As one quarter of Sheffield gloom pop band, Mabel Love, Daniel Whitehouse contributed to some the best new music to come out of the Steel City in the last decade.

But now, he’s going it alone. And the result is Rattlebrain. A song inspired by a recent trip to Stockholm where he took in a photographic exhibition by Paul Hanson.

‘They’re the rattlebrains, they don’t know any better!’ Whitehouse croons over an Interpol inspired backdrop. But who are the rattlebrains? We’ll leave you to use your imaginations to work that one out…

Rattlebrain is self produced and available to stream now.

Goldfrapp ft Dave Gahan – Ocean

After returning from a four year hiatus with 2017’s Silver Eye, Goldfrapp this week release a new version of the closing track from the album, Ocean, with this incarnation a collaboration with the godfather of synthpop: Depeche Mode frontman, Dave Gahan.

The combination of Gahan and Allison Goldfrapp is, as expected, fantastic and we can only hope that the outing from this pairing will not be a one off.

Anderson.Paak – Bubblin’

After the break through success of 2016’s acclaimed album Malibu, Californian rapper, songwriter, drummer and producer, Anderson.Paak, returns with more new music this week.

Along with his electric live performances together with his band, The Free Nationals, Paak has been busy, having already collaborated with FKA Twigs for an Apple Home Pod ad. And With Dr Dre on production duties here, the new album promises to be one not to be missed.

Following on from the previous release Til it’s over, new song Bubblin’ showcases Paak’s talents and builds anticipation for the expected album release later this year.
