New Music Recommendations – 18th January 2019

by Dave Bertram and Joseph Purcell

A quieter week, but another selection of new music to wrap your ears around. This week’s top offerings list the return of Santa Monica’s psych-folk songstress, Weyes Blood, along with Karen O, The Cinematic Orchestra, Animal Collective founding member, Panda Bear, and Rustin Man.

Following on from 2016’s critically acclaimed Front Row Seat to Earth, Natalie Mering (aka Weyes Blood) is back with new single, Andromeda. A sliding love song to precede an album in the spring.

The queen of the New York underground, Karen O, and producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse have joined forces on Woman. A more straightforward but no less enjoyable affair than their first offering, building anticipation for one of 2019’s most eagerly anticipated new records.

Near the tail end of 2018, Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox, announced Buoys – a full-length follow up to 2015’s kaleidoscopic album Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper. The cascading Token gives us a teaser of what’s to come in February.

Ex-Talk Talk bassist, Paul Webb makes his long-awaited return as Rustin Man with the haunting Judgement Train – the second track off forthcoming album Drift Code, out on Domino on 1st February.

And bringing up the rear, UK electronic duo The Cinematic Orchestra have brought a 12-year hiatus to an end with a follow-up to Ma Fleur. To Believe is another out on Domino in March, featuring Roots Manuva on A Caged Bird/Imitations of Life.

One to avoid? The Drums with the muddled Body Chemistry.
