Many present day bands cite influences of times gone by when discussing their current works, but few capture the nostalgia of the past quite like nudista. Summoning energies of Mazzy Star and fusing them with the modern indie folk brand that they have built for themselves, their debut EP, Halfway There, arrives today via underground label heroes, Sad Club Records.
Ahead of this release we caught up with the duo to chat through who they’ve been listening to of late. Here are their Five Right Now picks:
Katy Kirby – Cool Dry Place
We have both listened to Cool Dry Place on repeat since Robbie came across it. We love Katy’s intimacy that draws you into her world with her beautiful voice accompanied by amazing musicianship and great writing.
We get very inspired by this album and especially the epic ending on this track.
We love everything Big Thief touches – every album they release is a gem and their music really inspires us as a band. They are such incredible musicians and the connection between them when they play makes it very special.
We went to see them recently at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and they played this song – taken from the Two Hands LP. The whole night was great, but this song, in particular, stood out.
Robbie: Also since coming across Lomelda, I regularly listen to them – she has beautiful songs, and this particular one on the Hannah album makes me feel very happy ::::)))
Sylvie – Falls on Me
Robbie: My friend showed me this EP, and I instantly loved it from start to finish – when I don’t know what to listen to, I put this on. The songs are so warm and the production is amazing; it sounds like it was made in the 70s, and this song in particular is like Bonnie Raiit – Thank You’, love it.
Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers – Nothing New
Pilar: I’m a big fan of both Taylor and Phoebe so when this song came out I had it on repeat. Phoebe’s vocals add so much to this song and makes this song the ultimate collaboration between two amazing songwriters.
