Song: Lutalo – Call It In review

by Dave Bertram

Minneapolis-raised multi-instrumentalist, Lutalo Jones, isn’t the first budding American artist to up sticks from their urban surroundings and find inspiration in the rural mountains of the North East.

And on new single, Call It In, they display a rich, mournful baritone that bares resemblance to another artist to make a similar transition… Justin Vernon.

Fresh off the back of touring with Adrienne Lenker at the invitation of the Big Thief frontwoman, Jones, under the moniker of their first name, Lutalo, creates an addictive contrast on the first offering from forthcoming EP, Once now, then again.

Their deep vocal, which at points recalls soft grunge, sits on top of a bright, acoustic-led rhythm. The sun-lit production sparkles with almost plucked synths in the interludes between verses, which feel like streams of consciousness or internal monologue bathed in introspection.

The six track EP is set for independent release in May – be sure to remember it.
