Single of the week: Amen Dunes – Feel Nothing review

By Phil Scarisbrick

Fresh from signing with Sub Pop, Amen Dunes – the musical vehicle of Damon McMahon – returns with his first new music since 2018’s Freedom. Feel Nothing is an incredibly powerful opening statement for the new era of the project – with its loping synths being driven along by an infectiously affecting rhythm section. With no obvious chorus or hook, it nevertheless gets under your skin, stapling itself to your consciousness to remain affixed even after the final notes.

A collaboration with Sleaford Mods, it is only once the Andrew Fearn-composed beat drops out in the final salvo do we hear Jason Williamson’s voice appear like a luminous jellyfish lurking just beneath the surface. Perfectly visible, but distorted and shimmering in the ripples, the whole track feels like it harks back to the past – yet is simultaneously fresh and exciting. And excited we should be to see where Amen Dunes goes next.
