Ryan Adams – New Music Imminent?

by Phil Scarisbrick

Anyone who follows Ryan Adams, on either his Twitter or Instagram accounts, will know how great he is at keeping fans abreast of what he is doing- be it recording, jamming or simply goofing about. And it is refreshing to see how he clearly treasures that bond he has with his audience. Yesterday, during a stream of tweets interspersed with his dismay at the ongoing child separation issues in his homeland, he revealed that he has several records ready to go. Although no official release date was disclosed for any of them, it certainly excited his followers.

Among the reveals were that he has 17 new songs, Prisoner two and three, Black Hole, Live at Capitol Theatre and a live album of the Exile On Main Street tribute concert he performed in New Orleans with Don Was. He then revealed the artwork for Black Hole, which he said he was “Going for a run and going to listen to” and hoped he can release soon. Later, he also revealed that he recorded an album seemingly called Haywire with Glyn Johns, at the beginning of his separation from ex-wife Mandy Moore. He describes at as ‘intense as fuck’ as well as being ‘as Heartbreaker as any album since it.’

These reveals could make the rest of 2018 a very exciting time for DRA fans around the world, who will be hungry to get their hands on any new material. His last release was a limited, vinyl only record – Live at Rough Trade, so these releases could mark his first unloading of original material since last year’s Prisoner.

Whatever is released, it is shaping up to be his most prolific year since 2005, when he released three studio albums: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and 29. The latter of which we picked as one of ‘Essential Albums’ earlier in the year- a piece you can read here.
