New Music Recommendations – 6th September 2018

by Dave Bertram and Phil Scarisbrick

Julia Holter – I Shall Love 2

Julia Holter is back with Aviary –  the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2015 record, Have You in My Wilderness.

The new record, out on Domino in late October, spells an epic journey through what Julia Holter describes as “the cacophony of the mind in a melting world”. It’s been described as her most breathtakingly expansive album yet, full of startling turns and dazzling instrumental arrangements.

First single, I Shall Love 2, is a maelstrom of rain-drop drums, strings and thick bass over a half-spoken vocal.

Thom Yorke – Susperium

Iconic Radiohead frontman, Thom Yorke, is all set to release his score for the upcoming reimagination of Italian horror maestro Dario Argento’s 1977 classic, Suspiria.

Lead track, Susperium, is a world away from the tack 70’s prog-rockers Goblin took on the original, taking the listener down a chilling, winding road of slightly off kilter, double-tracked pianos and his trademark lamentful falsetto.

His skill at capturing a specific emotion is incomparable at times, and there are 24 more of these compositions to come in late October.

Marissa Nadler ft. Sharon Van Etten – I Can’t Listen To Gene Clarke Anymore

With her new album, For My Crimes, due out at the end of this month via Bella Union and Sacred Bones, Marissa Nadler has shared I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore – the third single taken from the album.

“With memories, sensory stimuli can animate the inanimate and forever assign meaning to almost anything. This song is about a more recent memory but the emotional time travel is real nonetheless. I think a lot of people can relate to the sentiment expressed in this song regardless of the specificity of the musical reference. Or at least that is my hope. For me it’s Gene Clark.” Nadler said in a press release.

With the sound of turmoil giving way to truth, this track and the rest of the songs on For My Crimes stare down the dark realisation that love may not be enough to keep two people together through distance and differing needs.

Bill Ryder Jones – And Then There’s You

Ex-Coral guitar virtuoso – turned multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer – Bill Ryder Jones is releasing fourth solo album, Yawn on Domino on the 2nd November.

Follow-up to lead single, Mither, And Then There’s You provides a flick-book of failed hopes underpinned with a brooding guitar riff that goes for the gut and succeeds. His stock-in-trade wordplay is out on full parade here – “My mistrust, my mistress, takes me home again, my mistress, my mistrust, we’re alone again.”

Granfalloon – Year Of The Rooster

Manchester based folktronica act, Granfalloon, have unveiled their new single, Year of the Rooster. The track is the fourth single released by the act this year – following on from Ambulance, Sleep and Broken Things – and will act as the lead track on an EP that will collect all four songs.

Last night (Thursday), they kicked off a European tour that takes in the UK, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy throughout September and into October. Keep your eyes peeled here at Secret Meeting over the coming weeks as we exclusively host their tour diary.

The Twilight Sad – Videograms

Glasgow’s The Twilight Sad are set to release their fifth full-length – and their first for Mogwai’s Rock Action Records – IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME – which is out early next year.

Icy album closer, Videograms, provides us with a second taste of what’s to come.

Ash – Confessions In The Pool

And for those looking for some nostalgia… Northern Ireland pop-rock outfit, Ash, are back with ‘elastic’ new single, Confessions In The Pool – the latest from their Top 20 charting new album, Islands – out now on Infectious Music.

One of the few remaining survivors from the 90s Britpop era, the new video depicts a discretion of priests pursuing a young man who proved a lifesaver. This is a rollocking trip down memory lane, and its pop core centre is even softer than 2001’s No 1 album, Free All Angels.
