New Music Recommendations – 25th January 2019 review

by Dave Bertram

Good lord, brace yourselves. Ryan Adams, Vampire Weekend, Beck, Mercury Rev, Stephen Malkmus, Apparat, new Bella Union signings Penelope Isles and the new collaboration of Phoebe and Conor Oberst all squeeze in to our recommendations for this week!

Ryan Adams has shared Fuck The Rain from his upcoming album Big Colours and it features a guitar solo from John Mayer.

After a six year wait, Ezra Koenig and the Vampire Weekend boys have finally got their act together, releasing two new songs ahead of their upcoming LP, Father of the Bride.

Apparat has returned. The German producer will release his new album LP5 on Mute in March and in tow with the announcement comes a trippy video for a new track, DAWAN.

Mercury Rev have shared their interpretation of Bobbie Gentry’s Tobacco Road, with featured vocalist and label mate Susanne Sundfør. The track is taken from the upcoming album The Delta Sweete Revisited – their track-by-track resurrection of Bobbie Gentry’s 1968.

You can sample the new electric groove of Stephen Malkmus on new single Viktor Borgia, which precedes a new LP set for the 15th March on Domino.

New Bella Union signings Penelope Isles introduce themselves with their harmony-oozing, Chlorine.

Beck has delivered a wonderful reinvention of Colourbox’s Tarantula, inspired by the Oscar-nominated film, ROMA.

Annnnddd finally, Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst have joined their gargantuan forces into new collaboration, Better Oblivion Community Center. You can wrap your ears around one of the first tracks, Dylan Thomas, above.

Bottom of the pile this week is the ‘super-chilled’ Cozy by Toronto duo SWANES. ’Let’s get real cozy; Nobody knows you; Like you’ – Radio 1-tipped, apparently.
