New Music Recommendations – 1st February 2019

by Dave Bertram and Phil Scarisbrick

Interpol fans rejoice! Another new track makes our recommendations this week alongside Animal Collective man Dave Portner, the Tame Impala/Theophilus London collaboration, Bob Mould, Lou Doillon, These New Puritans, Lucy Dacus and The Mountain Goats.

Paul Banks is on feverish form on Fine Mess, with the tried and tested formula of haunted lyrics standing over serpentine riffs and a thundering rhythm section rolled-out to fine effect. Listen here.

After their last release back in 2016, Theophilus London and Kevin Parker from Tame Impala are back at it with the groove-laden, synth filth of Whiplash.

Avey Tare, a.k.a Dave Portner of Animal Collective, has announced the new album Cows on Hourglass Pond, for release on 22nd March. The first track served-up is Saturdays (Again) – listen below.

After getting in touch with Cat Power as a bit of a stab in the dark through Instagram, Lou Doillon managed to persuade her to guest on her ace new single, It’s You – taken from the new album, Soliloquy, which was released on Wrasse Records today.

Ryan Adams’ favourite and former Husker Du frontman, Bob Mould, is also back with the first single, Lost Faith, from his new album, Sunshine Rock, which is due to drop through Merge Records next Friday.

Remember these lads? Long cast on the indie landfill, These New Puritans are set to end a six-year hiatus with new record, Inside the Rose, out in late March. Depeche Mode is very much the order of service on the excellent title track.

One third of supergroup boygenius, Lucy Dacus has announced a new series of songs simply entitled 2019. Consisting of both originals and covers, the songs are tied date-wise and thematically to specific holidays and days of note, and will be released collectively later in the year. The first track to be released is a cover of Edith Piaf’s classic, La Vie En Rose ahead of Valentine’s Day. Sung in both French and English, it very much has the Dacus stamp on it but keeps some that original Piaf fire.

And last but not least, indie-folk juggernauts The Mountain Goats have announced new album In League with Dragons this week and preceded it with the almost-six-minute Younger. Enjoy.
