New Music Recommendations – 16th November 2018

by Philip Moss and Joseph Purcell

Mercury Rev – Sermon ft Margo Price

Heading towards their thirtieth year together, New York natives, Mercury Rev, return with a full length tribute to country icon Bobbie Gentry- covering in full Gentry’s 1968 album The Delta Sweete plus her much loved Ode to Billie Joe.

Accompanying the band in this venture are Phoebe Bridgers and Marissa Nadler, along with a plethora of other artists: Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Beth Orton and Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval.

The first track taken from the album is Sermon featuring Third Man Records country singer Margo Price; her vocal cutting a perfect pathway through the trademark luscious sounds that have become the trademark of Mercury Rev for so many years.

Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete Revisited will be available 8th February via Bella Union.

Panda Bear – Dolphin

Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper was most definitely one of 2015’s best releases. And following the recent tour with Animal Collective, Noah Lennox is back with Dolphin!

Co-produced with collaborator, Rusty Santos, in Lennox’s adopted home city of Lisbon, he stated, “The last three records felt like a chapter to me, and this feels like the beginning of something new”.

Buoys is out through Domino Records on 8th February.

Rustin Man – Vanishing Heart

Former Talk Talk bassist, Paul Webb, has announced his return under the Rustin Man moniker.

In 2002, he released the collaboration with Portishead’s Beth Gibbons as Rustin Man, and every since he has been working in a converted barn on its follow up – from which Vanishing Heart is the first fruits.

Drift Code is out on Domino Records on 1st February.

Faye Webster – Kingston

With her roots immersed equally in the folk lineage of hazy Georgia Summers and her own experiences on hip hop label – Awful Records, as part of the burgeoning Atlanta hip hop scene- Faye Webster is quite the unique creative force.

Fresh from the acclaim of her 2017 self-titled sophomore record, Webster is back with the new single and first release since signing with Secretly Canadian.

A delightful mixture of brass, pedal steel, whimsical melodies and Webster’s floating voice, Kingston certainly whets the appetite for her next full length release, expected in 2019.

Webster will tour the US with Deerhunter in the New Year, after a series of intimate UK performances in January.
