New Music Recommendations – 15th February 2019

by Dave Bertram

This week’s new music recommendations are in!  We have Damien Jurado, Weyes Blood, Bella Union newbies Modern Nature, SASAMI, another from James Yorkston and Rain Phoenix.

Damien Jurado’s The Horizon Just Laughed was one of our favourite records of last year. He has now announced a speedy follow-up, In The Shape of a Storm, and if first single, South, is anything to go by, it will be his most stripped-back album yet. Recorded in one, two-hour burst in California, we’re really looking forward to hearing what he has to offer.

Weyes Blood is another act returning in April (5th), with her fourth album. Titanic Rising will feature the previously released Andromeda, as well as the excellent new single, Everyday. The accompanying video looks like CGI but is actually a bedroom filled completely with water. The post-apocalyptic feel of the song will probably match the terror of filming in such conditions.

Modern Nature have announced the release of their debut Nature EP, set for release on 22nd March via Bella Union, and have unveiled the first track, Supernature – an intimately atmospheric, wildly expansive 12-minute statement of intent. And it’s a world away from anything any of the members have made before.

Los Angeles-based artist, SASAMI, has shared a video for Free- the latest track from her anticipated self-titled debut album, which will be out in early March on Domino. It features additional vocals by Devendra Banhart.

To accompany his new record announcement, James Yorkston has shared new song My Mouth Ain’t No Bible – one of three enthralling spoken-word pieces on his new full length offering.

And finally, actor and musician, Rain Phoenix, has been joined by Michael Stipe on new track, Time Is the Killer. It’s her first single as a solo artist and arrives with a video directed by Bobby Bukowski and Bradley Gregg, who both worked with Rain’s late brother River Phoenix. .
