Five Right Now: The Bug Club

Possessing a vocal charm reminiscent of The Moldy Peaches and a social media series unlike many others, The Bug Club certainly don’t mind going about proceedings in their own way.

With a reputation for their chaotically endearing live performances, their debut EP, Launching Moondream One, replicates the energy they’re loved for. Produced by the New Age Messiah of Glam Rock, Tom Rees (Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard), the EP possesses all the flair of a 70’s classic, but with a muddied and tarnished grit, it is an entirely different kingdom that The Bug Club find themselves ruling over. With a sprinkle of Daniel Johnston and a dash of Car Seat Headrest, a wilderness stretched far and wide, full of gems from the past, is just waiting to be unearthed.

Ahead of this release, we caught up with the Bingo signed band, to see who they’ve been listening to recently. Here are their picks:

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard – Stockholm City Rock

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard have loads of really great songs, but I think this is the most undeniably badass one. Tom Rees is such a good frontman and the whole band are amazing. I like when people scream in the middle of a song and this has a really good scream in it. I love how there’s a disco version, dance version and normal version of Double Denim Hop too. We record with Tom in Cardiff and he’s a big legend.

Mr Ben And The Bens – Closing Time

I think this is such a beautiful song from their latest album Life Drawing. The whole album is really great, but I like how stripped back this one is. Just great words and nice melodies played brilliantly. I like to listen to it on repeat and pretend I wrote it, then put on Novia Scotia (the first song of theirs I heard and it’s still stuck in my head) when I need to get up and do stuff. Ben Hall works at Bingo Records and did all of the artwork for our EP. I bought a nice plant pot he made for my mum too and she loves it.

Dry Cleaning – Scratchcard Lanyard

I love their two EP’s and like them even more each time they release something – including the recent debut album, New Long Leg. I really like the funny words and the video is great. I’d love to be in the band and just play tambourine or something just to be a part of it.

Du Blonde – Acetone

This reminds me of lots of things I love, but I can’t put my finger on what they are. It makes me feel all of the emotions and is just a great song. Their albums have really good names and this song fills a bit of a David Bowie shaped hole for me. I really like the guitar on it too.

HMS Morris – Myfyrwyr Rhyngwladol

We saw HMS Morris play in Cardiff and they were amazing. At the end of the set, Heledd carried Sam off the stage through the audience and up some big steps, did some squats at the top and left the room without looking back. It was so cool. This song really makes me want to speak Welsh properly and I just like it a lot. Their song Mother is also stuck in my head most days.
