Ex:Re – Ex:Re review

by Mark Jackson

Elena Tonra’s debut solo release, Ex:Re (pronounced X-Ray/meaning ex-relationship), is a triumphant, yet understated and heartfelt work of art-pop. An immediately unassuming slow burner – it is laced with a lethal post breakup anger, rather than the sadness otherwise associated with the much worked ‘break-up’ album. Gone are the amalgam of drums and synth that layer over Tonra’s lyrical work with Daughter – this solo work is a subtle tapestry that is distinctively both distressing and heart-warming in equal measure.

Ex:Re is demanding of time on the turntable. Tonra’s lonesome drunken insults slither and snake a charm that is unique. Some records are tailor made for cosy autumnal evenings indoors though: lights off, candles lit, and wine open – on Ex:Re, Tonra has created just that; a long player where the mood is an even deeper blue than its sleeve. A crushingly uncomfortable, but captivating listen.

Secret Meeting score: 87
