Chastity Belt – Chastity Belt review

by Paige Sims

Putting a pause on the band long after their 2017 release, Chastity Belt were keen to follow their own artistic paths to become more present in the art they were creating.

This much-needed time apart sees the four-piece return with possibly one of the most graceful albums of 2019. Throughout its entirety, the LP provides honest, velvety melodies and smooth indie guitar licks. With more lush vocal harmonies, tracks like It Takes Time and Drown are intertwined with glorious emotional intricacies.

Appearing even more expressive and introspective than their previous releases, Chastity Belt is a delight from start to finish. While opener Ann’s Jam provides swirling warmth, the Elena Ferrente-inspired Elena is tinged with reflective hues. It’s evident that this album is a more poignant, confident album from the elegant four-piece.

Brimming with evocative soundscapes and glimmering with inflections of hope, Apart, Split and Pissed Pants offer opportunities for pure catharsis. Yet, despite its often gloomy nature and slow-burning tunes, this fourth album is professionally wrapped in nostalgia – detailing the evolution of a band who continue to solidify their legacy of presenting artistically mellow and vulnerable tunes as mollifying escapism.

Secret Meeting score: 83
